The Best Wheelchairs for Home Use: A Designer’s Guide
The Best Wheelchairs for Home Use: A Designer’s Guide
Not every wheelchair is right for every person. Here’s how to navigate the categories — and why Drive Medical is the standard I specify across all of them.

Wheelchair selection is more individualized than almost any other home mobility product — the right choice depends on how much the user can self-propel, how much time they spend in the chair, whether they need to fit through narrow doorways, and what the caregiver can manage for lifting and transport.
Rather than recommending a single model, I recommend a brand standard: Drive Medical. Across transport chairs, self-propelling standard chairs, and power chairs, Drive’s build quality is consistent — frames don’t flex unpredictably, footrests don’t loosen, and the weight is manageable for caregivers lifting into vehicles.

Drive Medical Wheelchairs
“Drive Medical is my specification standard for wheelchairs across all types. I recommend Drive over other brands due to superior build quality and reliability across their range: frames don’t flex unpredictably, footrests don’t loosen, and the weight is manageable for caregivers lifting into vehicles. Each client needs a different model based on their specific situation — I specify based on individual assessment — but Drive’s range covers every category with consistent quality I trust.”
Three Questions Before You Choose
1. Self-propelling or caregiver-pushed? If the user can push themselves, a standard self-propelling chair with large rear wheels is appropriate. If they cannot, a transport chair (lighter, smaller wheels, designed for caregiver pushing) is the right specification. Power chairs are indicated for users who cannot self-propel and spend significant time in the chair.
2. What’s the narrowest doorway in the home? Standard wheelchair width is 24″–27″. Many older homes have 28″–30″ doorways. Measure before specifying, and consider a narrower lightweight model if the home has tight passages.
3. Will it be transported in a vehicle? If yes, folding frame and weight matter significantly. Most caregivers cannot safely lift a standard chair into a trunk without help; a lightweight transport chair or ultra-lightweight standard chair is much more manageable.
