Before you spend a dollar on this room, make sure the house is the right answer.

Renovating a bathroom is expensive and permanent. For some families it is exactly right. For others the money goes further somewhere else entirely, and nobody tells you that before you start. I ran our own numbers and published them.

Is home care cheaper than assisted living?

How I choose for this room

The bathroom is where independence really matters — for everyone. Someone who can wash without another person in the room is infinitely valuable.

The first thing I bought for my parents’ house was a used stair lift. My mother almost never used it. She just stopped going upstairs.

So the question I ask in a bathroom is what will actually make this easy for them. Thinking about what capabilities they do have and catering everything to the control they do have. I tend to buy things, set it all up, have an occupational therapist run through everything with the person, and I return and improve what is still not perfect. Even if that’s just curtain rings that don’t glide easily enough for her to open and close the curtain herself.

Before you buy a single grab bar, read this. A grab bar is only as strong as what’s behind the wall. Screwed into drywall or tile alone, it will pull out under load — usually at the worst possible moment. It needs solid wood blocking between the studs, or a proven drywall-rated anchor system rated for the load.

If you are opening the wall for any reason, add blocking everywhere you might ever want a bar, not just where you want one now. Blocking costs almost nothing during a renovation and is expensive to add later. Anchor systems generally don’t work well and I’ve had problems with them even stabilizing a toilet roll holder.

Start here

If you’re not renovating and you want the highest return for the least money, in this order:

Under $200. One 42″ grab bar at the shower entry, professionally installed into blocking. A teak bench. A handheld shower with a slide bar so the height is adjustable and the water can be paused.

Under $800. The above, plus a lever handle on the bathroom door, plus a thermostatic valve or anti-scald mixing so the water can’t run hot.

Renovating. Zero threshold, linear drain, high-traction tile, blocking in every wall, and a bench built in rather than added on. Everything below supports that.

When You Need a Hand Sprayer at the Sink

Not every bathroom faucet needs to be touchless. The pull-out spray extends the reach and utility of a standard bathroom sink without requiring a renovation.

Wedi Fundo Riolito Neo

~$750

Modular curbless shower system with integrated linear channel drain. Pre-sloped, fully waterproofed, and ready for tile. Rachel’s preferred zero-threshold substrate system — elevated with a sleek linear drain design.

Best for: Curbless shower builds, zero-threshold access
Flush Stone Threshold Floor Transition

Flush Stone Threshold

$50–$300+ · Stone supplier or tile shop

A single slab of marble, limestone, or quartzite cut flush to span the transition between two floor materials. Unlike a raised saddle threshold — which creates a trip hazard and fails ADA compliance — a flush stone threshold sits perfectly level with both floors, providing a smooth, seamless crossing. Common in high-end bathrooms, European apartments, and boutique hotels. The natural variation in stone makes each threshold unique.

Best for: High-end bathrooms, wet-to-dry transitions, traditional luxury, historic properties
Curbless Shower Transition

Curbless Shower Transition

Varies · Linear drain + linear slope

The gold standard for aging-in-place bathrooms: a fully flush wet-to-dry transition with a linear drain and linear-sloped floor. No curb, no threshold, no trip hazard — just a seamless floor plane that works for every body, every age, and every ability level.

Best for: Aging-in-place bathrooms, wheelchair access, universal design, new construction and full gut renovations
