Products Occupational Therapists Love

Occupational therapists (OTs) spend their professional lives helping people function safely and independently in their homes. When an OT recommends a product, it is because they have seen, firsthand, the difference it makes in daily function — not because they encountered it in a catalog or a sponsored post. These are the categories and items that come up most frequently in OT home assessments.

Reacher/Grabber Tool

A reacher eliminates the need to bend, stretch, or reach overhead for objects that are slightly out of range. The Ettore Redi-Reach and the Vive Rotating Jaw Reacher are among the most consistently recommended. OTs particularly value them for preventing the reaching-while-off-balance moments that precede a significant number of home falls. One in the kitchen, one in the bedroom, one in the bathroom is the standard prescription.

Long-Handled Sponge and Shoehorn

Bending to reach the feet is one of the highest-fall-risk movements in the daily routine. A long-handled bath sponge (for the shower) and a long-handled shoehorn eliminate this motion entirely. The Maddak Contoured Bath Sponge and the ComfyBrace Long-Handled Shoehorn are both under $15 and frequently cited. This is a category where spending less than $20 produces a genuinely meaningful safety outcome.

Tub Transfer Bench

For anyone who has difficulty stepping over a tub wall, a transfer bench spans the tub edge and allows a seated entry and lateral slide into the bathing position. The Drive Medical Tub Transfer Bench is the most frequently recommended model. It is not beautiful, but it is functional in a way that eliminates a genuine high-risk maneuver from the daily routine.

Toilet Safety Frame

A toilet safety frame (also called a raised toilet seat with arms, or a toilet surround) provides grab points on either side of the toilet for sit-to-stand transitions. The Vaunn Adjustable Toilet Safety Rail is height-adjustable and requires no tools. OTs prescribe these for anyone who uses their hands to push off a seat or wall when rising from the toilet — a movement that indicates the toilet surface is too low for safe use without assistance.

Dycem Non-Slip Matting

Dycem is a specialized non-slip material used in clinical settings that has moved into home use. It comes in rolls or pre-cut mats and provides remarkable grip on smooth surfaces. OTs use it under plates and bowls to prevent sliding during eating, under mixing bowls during food prep, and on nightstands or tables to stabilize objects that might otherwise be knocked over. Available on Amazon and at OT supply vendors.

Wrist Weights for Fall Recovery

Research on fall prevention consistently includes strength training, particularly in the lower body and core. Weighted vest and ankle weight programs prescribed by OTs are supported by multiple studies showing reduced fall frequency in adults who follow resistance training protocols. The Bala Bangles and the Empower Adjustable Wrist/Ankle Weights are both usable for gentle home resistance work.

The Broader Point

An OT home assessment is itself one of the highest-value investments available to any older adult or caregiver. A trained OT spends 60 to 90 minutes in the home, identifies specific risk factors, and recommends targeted modifications. It is covered by Medicare in many situations and produces a prioritized list of changes that are far more precise than any general guide. If this is a possibility, it is worth pursuing before purchasing anything else.
